Reima outerwear is designed to allow room for growth and therefore includes approximately 2 3/8" (6 cm) of extra space, which means our sizes may run large. However, it is still recommended to buy the size that corresponds to your child's age.
Please note that to use the size chart, you must take your child's body measurements, not a garment's measurements.

Selecting the right winter gear determines whether a day on the mountain is an absolute blast or a freezing disaster. The Reima Kairala winter jacket is built specifically to handle intense cold, wet snow, and high-velocity wind. Active kids need outerwear that moves with them while blocking out the elements completely. This heavy-duty ski jacket delivers professional-grade technical specs in a kids' sizing package, ensuring your child stays warm, dry, and focused on their turns.
Parents often struggle to find a balance between heavy insulation and mobility. Heavy, bulky coats restrict movement, making it hard for kids to ski, snowboard, or even build a snow fort. This specialized ski jacket solves that problem by using lightweight, high-loft synthetic insulation that traps body heat without adding unnecessary weight. The active cut ensures full range of motion in the shoulders and arms, which is exactly why the Reima Kairala stands out in competitive youth ski apparel.
Technical Specifications Built For Extreme Alpine Environments
When you look at premium kids' outerwear, the numbers tell the true story of how the garment will perform under pressure. The Reima Kairala features an impressive waterproof rating of 12,000 mm, meaning the fabric can withstand serious water pressure before any moisture penetrates. This high rating ensures that your child stays perfectly dry even during a full day of heavy, wet Pacific Northwest snowfall or while sitting directly on a wet ski lift.
Durability matters just as much as water resistance when kids are flying down technical trails or climbing over icy rocks. Reima tests their fabrics using the specialized Martindale abrasion test, which subjects the material to intense friction using sandpaper or wool. The outer shell of this jacket boasts a durability rating of over 40,000 cycles, proving it can survive rough tumbles on hard-pack snow and ice without tearing.
Breathability prevents the cold sweat that leads to shivering later in the day. Active skiers sweat heavily, and if that moisture gets trapped inside the jacket, it cools down rapidly during lift rides. With a breathability rating of 7,000 g/m²/24h, the Reima Kairala allows moisture vapor to escape from the inside out while preventing cold wind from entering.
- Water Column Rating: 12,000 mm hydrostatic head for total waterproof protection.
- Durability Rating: Over 40,000 Martindale abrasion cycles to resist tears and scuffs.
- Breathability Metric: 7,000 g/m²/24h to keep sweating kids dry from the inside.
- Insulation Weight: 140g Fellex Eco insulation made from 100% recycled polyester fibers.
- Safety Feature: Detachable, adjustable hood that releases easily if caught on a tree branch.
Advanced Protection Features and Snowproofing Systems
Powder days are incredible until snow finds its way up a jacket hem or down a sleeve. The Reima Kairala incorporates an integrated snow lock, also known as a powder skirt, at the waist. This elasticized gripper band snaps securely around your child’s hips to form a tight seal against flying powder and cold drafts. The snow lock connects seamlessly to matching Reima winter pants to create a unified barrier against deep snow drift.
Adjustability is everywhere on this jacket to allow for a perfectly tailored fit that grows slightly with the child. The hem features an internal drawcord system that can be tightened on bitter, windy afternoons to trap warmth. The outer cuffs feature adjustable hook-and-loop tabs to seal out wind, while inner stretchy lycra wrist cuffs with thumbholes keep the sleeves from riding up and prevent snow from entering the space between the jacket and kids' waterproof gloves.
Skiers need dedicated storage options that keep essential gear secure and easily accessible on the mountain. This coat includes a specialized ski pass pocket located on the lower left sleeve, allowing your child to breeze through electronic lift gates without fumbling for their card. Two zippered hand pockets offer safe storage for snacks, while an internal chest pocket keeps smartphones or goggles warm and protected from freezing temperatures that drain battery life.
Sustainable Engineering and Eco-Friendly Materials
Modern parents demand gear that protects their kids without harming the environment they love to explore. Reima treats the outer shell of the Reima Kairala with Bionic-Finish Eco, a highly effective water and dirt repellent that is completely free from fluorocarbons (PFCs). Traditional water-repellent coatings use harmful chemicals that persist in nature, but this sustainable alternative uses a dense branched polymer structure to make water bead up and roll off naturally.
The dirt-resistant properties of this coating mean you do not have to wash the jacket constantly after every muddy outdoor adventure. Often, you can simply wipe off surface mud or grime with a damp cloth, preserving the longevity of the fabric and saving water. When a full wash is necessary, the coat holds up beautifully in standard washing machines, maintaining its color, shape, and technical performance properties over years of hard use.
The warmth inside this jacket comes from Fellex insulation, a high-quality material certified by the Global Recycled Standard. This insulation utilizes bluesign-approved materials, ensuring that the entire manufacturing process adheres to strict environmental and worker safety standards. By choosing the Reima Kairala, you are investing in top-tier performance while supporting a circular economy that prioritizes recycled resources and clean production methods.
Layering Systems For Maximum Winter Warmth
To get the absolute best performance out of premium outerwear, you need to understand how to layer underneath it properly. The Reima Kairala serves as the ultimate protective outer shell, but it works hardest when paired with high-quality base and mid-layers. Avoid putting cotton t-shirts or cotton hoodies under this technical coat, as cotton absorbs moisture, holds it against the skin, and causes rapid chilling.
Start your child with a synthetic or merino wool base layer that fits snugly against the body to wick sweat away instantly. On exceptionally cold mornings, add a breathable fleece mid-layer to trap air and provide an extra pocket of warmth between the base layer and the jacket insulation. This modular setup allows your kid to unzip or remove a layer if the afternoon sun gets warm, keeping them comfortable from first chair to last run.
Our full inventory at Crocozebra includes everything you need to complete this high-performance system. You can browse our curated selection of kids' thermal base layers to find the perfect foundation for cold days. Pair this jacket with our heavy-duty toddler snowsuits for younger siblings, ensuring the whole family stays warm while exploring the great outdoors together in premium Scandinavian style.
Longevity and Care Instructions For Premium Outerwear
Investing in high-end ski apparel means you expect the garment to last through multiple seasons and potentially be passed down to younger siblings. The high Martindale durability rating ensures the fabric remains intact, but proper washing techniques keep the waterproof membrane functioning at peak efficiency. Always zip up all pockets and fasten all hook-and-loop straps before placing the jacket in the washing machine to prevent snagging.
Wash the coat inside out on a gentle cycle using a mild liquid detergent that does not contain bleaching agents or fabric softeners. Fabric softeners clog the microscopic pores of breathable membranes, destroying the fabric's ability to let sweat escape. Tumble dry the jacket at a low temperature setting, as a brief period of gentle heat actually helps reactivate the Bionic-Finish Eco water-repellent treatment on the outer shell.
This durable piece of gear retains its market value incredibly well because of its premium construction. When your child finally outgrows it, the shell will still look crisp and the insulation will still hold its loft, making it perfect for hand-me-downs or resale. Giving your kid top-tier gear means fewer complaints about the cold, longer sessions on the mountain, and unforgettable family outdoor memories, all supported by the unrivaled engineering of the Reima Kairala.
